Traditions from both the Shiah and the Ahle Sunnah are clear that Imam Mahdi (as) is the son of Imam Hasan Askari (as) and Janabe Narjis Khatoon (sa). While we have discussed this in the topic of the birth of Imam Mahdi (as), here are some further traditions in this regard.
Ibne Kheshab narrates from Sadeq Ibne Musa who narrated to me from his father who narrated from Imam Ali Reza (as) who said, the virtuous successor (Khalafus Saleh) shall be from the children of Hasan Ibne Ali al-Askari (as). He is the Imam Mahdi, the Master of the Age.
al-Yawaaqit Wal Jawaaher of Abdul Wahab Sha’rani narrates from Al Futuhaat al-Makkiyah, Know that the reappearance of Mahdi is inevitable. However he shall not reappear until the earth has been filled with cruelty and oppression. He shall be from the lineage of the Holy Prophet (sawa) and from the progeny of Fatemah (sa). His great grandfather is Imam Husain Ibne Ali Ibne Abi Talib (as) and his father is Hasan Askari (as), the son of Imam Ali Naqi (as), the son of Imam Muhammad Taqi (as), the son of Imam Ali Reza (as), the son of Imam Musa Kazim (as), the son of Imam Jafar Sadiq (as), the son of Imam Mohammed Baqir (as), the son of Imam Ali Ibne Abi Talib (as). His name is the same as that of the Holy Prophet (sawa). The Muslims will pay allegiance to him between ‘Rukn’ and ‘Maqaam’ (station of Ibrahim).
Sayyid Abdul Wahab Sha’rani in the sixty fifth chapter of his book al-Yawaqit Wal Jawahar writes, Imam Mahdi is the son of Imam Hasan Askari (as).
The author of Durrul Musawiya writes, Those whom I found to be having the same belief as we Shiites in the matter of Imam Mahdi are Mohammed Ibne Yusuf Ganji Shafaei in Al Bayan Fee Akhbaris Sahebaz Zaman, Mohamed Ibne Talha Shafaei in Mataalib-us-Soal, Sibt Ibne Jauzi in Tazkeratul Aimmah and Sha’rani in al-Yawaaqit Wal Jawaaher where they have all said, “Mahdi is the son of Imam Hasan Askari (as). He was born in the night of fifteenth of Shaban 255 AH and is still living until he and Isa Ibne Maryam meet each other.
Shaykh Salahuddin Safadi whose exact statement has been narrated in the book of Yanabiul Mawaddah from Sharh-e-Dayera, Shaykh Ali Ibne Mohammed Maliki in his book Fusulul Muhimmah and Shaykh Hamuini Shafaei in Faraedus Simtayn have narrated, Verily the promised Mahdi is the son of Abi Mohammed Hasan Askari son of Ali Naqi (as)
Sakar says, I heard Ali Ibne Mohammed (as) saying: After me, the Imam will be Hasan and after Hasan will be his son Qaem who will fill the earth with justice. (Isbatul Huda by Shaykh Hurre Amili, volume 6, page 275)
Mohammed ibne Usman narrates from his father, I was in presence of Imam Askari (as) and asked the question, “Till Qiyamat the earth will not be empty with an Imam and that one who dies without recognising the time of Imam will die the death of an ignorant?
Imam replied, This is a clear fact. I asked, O the son of Holy Prophet (sawa)! After you who will be Hujjat”, Imam replied, After me my son Mohammed will be the Imam. Whoever dies without recognising him will die as an ignorant. Beware that he will have occultation … falsehood will perish and whoever fixes the time of his reappearance will be a liar. When the time of Ghaybat will be over he will reappear and you will see a white flag from Najaf (Beharul Anwar, volume 51, page 160)
Ahmad ibne Hasan Ibne Ishaq Qummi narrates that when Khalafus Saleh (Imam Mahdi) was born, I received a letter from Imam Hasan Askari (as) through Ahmad Ibne Ishaq which was written by Imam Askari (as) himself, “A child has been born at my house. Keep this message secret and do not narrate it to anyone except to our friends and relatives. (Isbatul Huda, volume 6, page 432)
Regarding traditions about the respected mother of Imam Mahdi (as), it is reported, His respected father is Imam Hasan Askari (as). His beloved mother is Janabe Narjis Khatoon (sa). She was the descendant of the Caesar of Rome from her father’s side and from her mother’s side she had descended from Shamoon, the vicegerent of Hazrat Isa (as) (Kamaaluddin volume 2, page 420 and page 424).
